Tables and regression

When a question gives a table of values, Desmos can find the equation that fits it.

Example: the lists x1=[1,2,3,4,5]x_1 = [1, 2, 3, 4, 5] and y1=[3,5,7,9,11]y_1 = [3, 5, 7, 9, 11] can be entered with the regression y1∼mx1+by_1 \sim m x_1 + b. Desmos reports m=2m = 2 and b=1b = 1, so the data fits y=2x+1y = 2x + 1 exactly.

  • Type ~ (tilde) for a regression. Use a⋅bx1a \cdot b^{x_1} for exponential data or ax12+bx1+ca x_1^2 + b x_1 + c for quadratic data.
  • You can also add a table from the + menu and type the values in.

On the test: "which equation models the data in the table?" Run the regression and match the coefficients to the choices.
